Certamente, la nostra filosofia è proprio quella di creare video interamente gratuiti accessibili agli utenti che li possono condividere con gli altri utenti del web.

Lo stile di Not in Words

Un fulmine a ciel sereno: come nasce l'idea

Not in Words nasce sul finire del 2008, come un fulmine a ciel sereno ma dopo tanto pensare e ripensare!

Da un po' di tempo infatti avevo pensato che mi sarebbe molto piaciuto realizzare dei video animati a costo zero. Una cosa un po' difficile in quanto produrre un'animazione, breve o lunga che essa sia, ha dei costi che sono difficilmente abbattibili. L'acquisto dei softwares, lo studio dei personaggi, gli anni pregressi di formazione, i costi dello studio, il lavoro orario... tutti costi che non riuscivo a conciliare con la mia idea.

Poi c'è stato il boom del Social network, del Web 2.0 e della “Freeconomics”. E come accade spesso è stato un lampo, ho pensato: “Se io produco alcune animazioni con un contenuto divulgativo (come stanno andando molto di moda in questo periodo sul Web), le diffondo sul web e permetto agli utenti di condividerle e di scaricarle per uso personale e permetto ad aziende di farsi pubblicità sul mio sito, in questo modo posso coprire i costi di produzione e allo stesso tempo far arrivare la mia arte proprio a tutti!”.
Questa è stata il primo lampo di genio che mi ha illuminata!

Ma subito, come una spada di Damocle, mi caduto in testa un problema da non sottovalutare: “Come veicolare i contenuti dei miei video?” e ancora: “Che lingua utilizzare?” e poi: “Riuscirò ad arrivare proprio a tutti utilizzando una lingua come ad esempio l'inglese?”.

Ed ecco il secondo lampo di genio: “Devo riuscire a creare qualcosa che non sia parlato. Qualcosa che riesca a spiegare un concetto senza l'ausilio della lingua codificata, della lingua parlata. Una specie di linguaggio universale fatto di immagini”. Del resto, per me che inizio questa carriera da animatrice cartoon, era una sfida accettabile: ho sempre ritenuto efficace e comunicativo un cartone animato o uno storyboard o un'illustrazione se riusciva a trasmettere il suo significato senza l'ausilio delle parole, ne' scritte, ne' parlate!

Cosa è Not In Words

La caratteristica dei video di Not in Words è la brevità. Il limite massimo della lunghezza per un video è di 3 minuti. Sono infatti profondamente convinta che per veicolare un contenuto occorre essere brevi e cercare di focalizzare i punti importanti con una sintesi efficace. Non vorrei mai annoiare i miei visitatori: sono già una persona che tende ad annoiarsi di se stessa! Sarebbe una sconfitta per me sapere che le persone si annoiano a guardare i miei video!

Al momento i video prodotti da Not In Words sono tre: i primi tre che ho creato cercando di individuare quali argomenti potessero essere di maggior interesse per una persona che utilizza il web per trovare informazioni. Non mi sono concentrata su tematiche essenzialmente cibernetiche. Ho al contrario pensato di poter utilizzare i miei video per fare dei piccoli “vademecum” tra cui uno, il Web 2.0 è dedicato a spiegare cosa è secondo la mia esperienza l'evoluzione del Web al 2.0.
L'obiettivo di Not in Words è di realizzare un filmato al mese, questo per darmi modo di avere il tempo per farmi pubblicità sul web e su tutti i canali adatti al mio prodotto.

Ricordate: siete liberi di condividere (con il codice embed riportato sotto il video), scaricare e diffondere i video senza dover pagare niente. Le uniche regole da rispettare sono:

- non alterare in alcun modo i video ed i loro contenuti
- indicare sempre l’autore dei video e cioè Not in Words
- non utilizzare i contenuti di Not in Words a scopo commerciale
- rispettare i termini della licenza di utilizzo

Mi chiamo Paola Pozzessere. Sono Italiana, Toscana per la precisione anche se il mio complicato cognome tradisce le mie origini (per metà) pugliesi. Sono felicemente sposata con Antonio dal 19 maggio del 2007. Antonio è l'unica persona che oltre a donarmi un amore infinito, ad avere un'infinita pazienza con me e a spronarmi sempre a creare e a non fermarmi di fronte alle difficoltà, è l'unica persona (oltre a me ma prima di me) che ha creduto, crede e (spero) crederà sempre in me e nelle mie capacità! Se non ci fosse Antonio sicuramente oggi non sarei nel mio amato studio a creare video nati dalla mia fantasia e a diffonderli sul web. Non so cosa sarei ma di sicuro non sarei arrivata così in alto.

La mia educazione inizia con il Liceo Artistico. Il mio sogno da diciassettenne era quello di lavorare nell'allora nascente mondo della grafica pubblicitaria (mi sono diplomata nel 1993). Ma i miei genitori non volevano farmi studiare troppo lontana da casa (sigh!) così ho ripiegato per la laurea in Storia dell'Arte. Ho conseguito la laurea in pochi anni e con quasi il massimo dei voti (Mi sono infatti scoperta un'amante della Ricerca). Ho amato moltissimo i miei studi umanistici ma ho sempre covato dentro di me il desiderio di ritornare all'arte manuale una volta terminati gli studi!

E così ho fatto! Dopo laureata ho ripreso a studiare nel campo artistico frequentando una scuola di animazione 2D a Roma. La mia mano era un po' arrugginita ma non la mia testa che non ha mai smesso di 'sfornare' idee!

Nel 2006 ho avviato la mia attività nel campo dell'animazione 2D e l'ho chiamata Toc Toc. In questi anni di lavoro e impegno ho avuto l'intuizione che il 'grande passo' per me sarebbe stato quello di abbassare, ridurre e azzerare i costi per la clientela finale. Da sempre ho desiderato fare dei prodotti di alta qualità a costo zero per l'utente. Mi ci è voluto un anno per arrivare a pianificare Not in Words. Un sito dove si possono trovare, condividere e scaricare video informativi su tutto e senza dover pagare niente.

L'idea che poi mi ha stimolato nella realizzazione dei video è stata una sfida: quella di vedere se ero in grado di esprimere dei concetti senza l'ausilio delle parole, della voce che spiega! Vedendo i miei primi lavori posso dire di essere abbastanza soddisfatta di me.

Mi auguro che la mia idea cresca giorno per giorno, che il mio sito abbia tantissimi visitatori e che la nuova “freeconomics” sia per me l'occasione per far conoscere al mondo quanto valgo!

Un ringraziamento particolare va a Tullia Moneta, un'amica madrelingua inglese. A Tullia riconosco la maternità del nome Not In Words, è nato dalla sua fantasia si!

Un altro ringraziamento a Michele Seidman che mi tiene costantemente aggiornata sui modi di dire più in voga in America!

2) Can I link to your videos?
Certainly, our philosophy is to create videos that are entirely free to the users who can share them with other users of the web.

3) Can I download your Videos?
Certainly, our purpose is to diffuse our brand through the sharing and the free downloading of our contents. Not in Words doesn’t use words, so it can communicate to everyone.

4) Do you have a spoken version of your videos?
No, Not in Words was born with the object of being universally comprehensible. If we were to add words it would become another product.

5) Why do you sometimes use English words?
Behind every video there is a thorough study to make it possible not to use any words. Nevertheless, sometimes it is necessary to use some terms that are in English. This allows most people to understand immediately the content of the message. We are sorry if some people do not understand the words used.

6) Can I hire you to make a custom video for my business/product/service?
Certainly!! Through this page you can ask us to produce a personalized video as long as your request is coherent with our guide-lines.

A bolt of lightning from a clear sky: how the idea was born

Not in Words was born at the end of 2008 like a bolt of lightning from a blue sky but after having given it a great thought!

For sometime I thought I would like to make cartoon videos free of charge. A difficult task because to produce a cartoon, whether short or long, has costs which are difficult to eliminate. Acquiring software, study of characters, long years of professional training, the cost of the studio, the hours of work are expenses which contrasted with my idea.

Then came the boom of the social network, of Web 2.0, and of “Freeconomics”.
And as often happens it was an illumination.
I thought: if I produce animated cartoons with a popular content (which is very fashionable on the web these days) and I put them on the Internet and allow users to share and download them for personal use and permit firms to advertise themselves on my site I could cover the cost of production and communicate my art to everybody at the same time.

Straight away I realized there was a problem “how could I communicate the content of my videos?” and “what language should I use?” and then “Will I manage to reach everybody using a language like English?” (not my first language).
And then another thunderbolt hit me: “I must create something which is not spoken! Something which explains a concept without the use of the spoken language. A universal language made of pictures”.
For me, that started my career as a cartoonist and it was an acceptable challenge. I’d always thought that a cartoon or illustration manage to transmit meaning without the use of the written or spoken word.

What is “Not in words”

The characteristic of the videos of Not in Words is their brevity. The maximum length of the video is three minutes. I’m convinced that to communicate you need to be brief and focus on the important points. I wouldn’t want to bore my visitors, it would be a defeat!

At the moment the videos produced by Not in Words are 3: the first three, I created trying to find subjects which would interest people surfing the web for information.
I thought I would use my videos to create short “guides”. One of them, the Web 2.0 video explains my experience of the evolution of Web 2.0. The object of Not in Words is to realize one video a month in order to give me time to advertise myself on the Web and any other form suitable to my product.

Remember: you are free to share (with the code embed at the end of the video), download and circulate without paying anything. The only rules to follow are:

don’t alter the video and contents in any way
always indicate the author (Not in Words)
do not use any contents of Not in Words for commercial purposes
respect the terms of the License Agreement

My name is Paola Pozzessere. I’m Italian and I live in Tuscany.
I’ve been happily married since the 19th of May 2007. Antonio, my husband, apart from loving me immensely, believes in me and encourages me to create and helps me not to surrender when there are difficulties. Without him I wouldn’t be here in my studio creating videos and putting them on the web.

At the moment I live and work in Italy but my dream is to go and live in California. Sun all year round! Lovely!

The best way to describe me is to say that my head is full of ideas! I’m always looking out for new ways of making myself and the passion I put in my work known to everybody.

My studies

I studied at an Artistic Secondary school and got my diploma in 1993. When I was seventeen my dream was to work in the world of graphic advertising. Instead I studied the History of Art at University, because my parents didn’t want me to study away from home. I got my degree with high marks and I discovered that I loved doing Research. I really enjoyed my studies but I also longed to return to doing manual art. After my degree I went to study in a school for 2D animation in Rome. From then onwards I never stopped having new ideas!

In 2006 I started my business in 2D animation and I called it Toc Toc. In these years of hard work I have always had the intention of finding a way of reducing or totally cutting the costs for my clients. I have always tried to find a way to give to my clients free high quality products. It took me a year to plan my website “Not In Words” where it is possible to find, share and download videos for free.

I also embraced another challenge: I want to express concepts without using words but pictures.
Looking at my work so far I feel reasonably satisfied.

I hope that my ideas will grow day by day and that my web site will have many visitors. I also hope that new “Freeconomics” will give me the possibility to show what I’m worth.
Special thanks to Tullia Moneta, my English mother tongue friend who thought of the name of my web site “Not In Words”.

Another thank you must go to Michele Seidman that keeps me constantly informed on new expressions used in the American language!
